1.	Hachiro Uchiyama, Chigusa Uchiumi and Hiroki Inoue : Psychosocial Factors and Change in Time Spent Studying by Students in Japan during the COVID-19 Pandemic, JAILA Journal, Vol.9, 44-55, 2023. (Summary) This study examines predictive associations between psychosocial variables as independent variables and ``Change in Time Spent Studying by Students'' as the dependent variable. Data collected by the Cabinet Office of Japan amid the COVID-19 pandemic are analyzed with multivariate models to screen for the best combination of variables that can account for the effects on the dependent variable. A series of binary logistic regression analyses illuminates that the model with motivation to study, anxiety, life satisfaction, satisfaction with health status, and satisfaction with social bonds as explanatory variables is the fittest of all tested models. In particular, the importance of motivation, anxiety, and life satisfaction is deliberated regarding their effects on study-related variables. Furthermore, these variables' implications for evidence-based school policies and curricula are discussed. Nagisa Sugaya, Tetsuya Yamamoto, Naho Suzuki and Chigusa Uchiumi : Change in Alcohol Use during the Prolonged COVID-19 Pandemic and Its Psychosocial Factors: A One-Year Longitudinal Study in Japan., International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, Vol.20, No.5, 2023. (Summary) This study investigated changes in alcohol use and its related psychosocial factors during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan. Two online surveys were completed by participants between 15 and 20 June 2021 (phase 1) and 13 and 30 May 2022 (phase 2). A total of 9614 individuals participated in both phases (46% women, mean age = 50.0 ± 13.1 years) and a repeated three-way analysis of variance and multinomial logistic regression analysis were conducted. These data analyses showed that the presence of hazardous alcohol use at phase 2 was predicted by being male and unmarried, having a higher annual household income and age, having a larger social network, and displaying fewer COVID-19 prevention behaviors at phase 1. Further, the presence of potential alcoholism at phase 2 was predicted by being male, being more anxious, having a larger social network, exercising more, showing a deterioration of economic status, having more difficulties owing to a lack of daily necessities, having less healthy eating habits, and showing fewer COVID-19 prevention behaviors at phase 1. These findings suggest that psychological problems and increased work (or academic) and economic difficulties were associated with severe alcohol problems during a later stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Naho Suzuki, Tetsuya Yamamoto, Chigusa Uchiumi and Nagisa Sugaya : Socio-economic and behavioral characteristics associated with COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy under a declared state of emergency in Japan, Brain, Behavior, & Immunity - Health, Vol.22, 100448, 2022. (Summary) Evidence regarding coronavirus disease 2019 vaccination indicates that some people hesitate to be vaccinated, and previous studies demonstrate the variables that influence hesitancy to vaccinate. However, they have not limited the target population to areas where infection is prominent. This study aimed to clarify the characteristics of people living in these areas who hesitate to be vaccinated and recommend effective approaches to encourage vaccination. The survey was conducted online between February 24 and March 1, 2021, during which the 2nd state of emergency was declared in Japan. The analytic sample comprised 17,582 unvaccinated individuals (mean age = 48.6 ± 13.8, range = 18-90 years). The -test results indicate that current or past treatment for physical illness exerted a strong influence on vaccine hesitancy (s = 0.30). Similarly, multiple regression analyses revealed that understanding the importance and necessity for preventive behaviors had the greatest influence on the intention to vaccinate (β = 0.48). Regarding recommendations to promote willingness to be vaccinated, our findings indicated that clear explanation of the reasons for the necessity for these behaviors and collaboration between representatives of various communities would effectively encourage vaccination. Nagisa Sugaya, Tetsuya Yamamoto, Naho Suzuki and Chigusa Uchiumi : The Transition of Social Isolation and Related Psychological Factors in 2 Mild Lockdown Periods During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Japan: Longitudinal Survey Study., JMIR Public Health and Surveillance, Vol.8, No.3, e32694, 2022. (Summary) Lockdowns and stay-at-home orders announced internationally for COVID-19 have led to physical and social distancing, with reports of many individuals experiencing social isolation (SI) and loneliness. Although the emergency declaration in Japan was declared as a "mild" lockdown requested by the government without penalties for violations, the lockdown measures, including SI, had several influences on people's lives and mental health as in other countries. Furthermore, Japan declared a state of emergency multiple times; thus, it is necessary to examine the influence of the transition of SI caused by repeated emergency declarations and the deterioration of mental health associated with these changes. This study longitudinally investigated the transition of SI and its related factors during the mild lockdown under 2 declared states of emergency in Japan and analyzed psychosocial characteristics by extracting clusters where people with specific transition patterns of SI predominated. We collected data on 7893 inhabitants (3694 [46.8%] women, 49.6 [SD 13.7] years old) living in the 7 prefectures where the initial emergency declaration was applied. The investigations took place online in the final phase of the first and second states of emergency: phase 1 (between May 11 and 12, 2020) and phase 2 (between February 24 and 28, 2021). Nonparametric Bayesian coclustering was used to visualize the exhaustive interaction structure between the transition pattern of SI and the psychosocial variables. There were no improvements in social networks and loneliness between the 2 phases, although psychological distress significantly improved and depression slightly decreased. Overall, 3868 (49%) of the 7893 participants remained socially isolated through phases 1 and 2, and 947 (12%) were socially isolated in phase 2, even though they were not socially isolated in phase 1. More participants experienced persistent SI in unmarried, childless, and low-household-income groups. The persistent-SI group had fewer cohabitants than other transition pattern groups. The nonparametric Bayesian coclustering results showed that most clusters, including participants without SI throughout phases 1 and 2, had healthy behaviors, more interactions, good relationships, and less loneliness and psychological stress. Furthermore, the cluster in which relationships deteriorated in phase 1 recovered in phase 2. Comparatively, the clusters with SI throughout phases 1 and 2 were divided into clusters with increased loneliness and psychological stress; clusters were close to participants' average scores in this study. The clusters with increased loneliness and psychological stress were notable for deteriorating relationships and less online interaction. This study revealed the actual state of transition of SI and related psychological, social, and behavioral factors under repeated declarations of a state of emergency. These results should help construct intervention methods that fit individual characteristics of people in SI during a pandemic. Naho Suzuki, Tetsuya Yamamoto, Chigusa Uchiumi and Nagisa Sugaya : Effects of Interoceptive Sensibility on Mental Health during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, Vol.18, No.9, 4616, 2021. (Summary) The current coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has been reported to influence interoceptive sensibility. This study focused on adaptive and maladaptive aspects of interoceptive sensibility and examined how each aspect of interoceptive sensibility affects depression, anxiety, and somatization symptoms under the mild lockdown in Japan, which was not enforceable and a non-punitive lockdown. We used data from 10,672 participants who lived in prefectures where the emergency declaration was first applied in Japan. Interoceptive sensibility was measured by the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA). The findings show that Noticing, a subscale of the MAIA, significantly contributed to the worsening of psychological and somatic symptoms (all s < 0.001). Conversely, Not-Distracting, Not-Worrying, Self-Regulation, and Trusting significantly contributed to the decrease of these symptoms (all s < 0.05). The findings suggest that two aspects of interoceptive sensibility affected mental health in different ways during the mild lockdown. Mindfulness and mindfulness-based interventions would be effective in terms of enhancing adaptive aspects of interoceptive sensibility. Chigusa Uchiumi, Hiroshi Kato, Motohiro Ishida, Masahito Nakataki and Tetsuro Ohmori : Peritraumatic reactions, PTSD symptoms, and pain : A study of train disasters in Japan., The Journal of Medical Investigation : JMI, Vol.68, No.1.2, 85-89, 2021. (Summary) Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between peritraumatic reactions, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and pain in people injured in train disasters. Methods : The participants were injured in a train crash in Japan that left more than 100 dead. There were 218 participants in the analysis, with a mean age of 37.50 ± 14.67 years. Peritraumatic reactions were assessed using the Peritraumatic Distress Inventory. PTSD symptoms were evaluated using the Impact of Event Scale-Revised Japanese-language version. Pain was measured using the Visual Analog Scale. Results : Peritraumatic reactions did not directly affect PTSD symptoms but were found to be associated via latent variables. Regarding pain and PTSD symptoms, intrusive memories were more associated with pain than other symptoms were. There was an associative path from intrusion to pain, but no such path from pain to intrusion. Conclusions : Our results suggest that a therapeutic approach to intrusion may be effective in ameliorating the pain caused by injury. Future research should examine integrated treatment approaches for both PTSD and pain, rather than just for aspects of PTSD. J. Med. Invest. 68 : 85-89, February, 2021. Tetsuya Yamamoto, Chigusa Uchiumi, Naho Suzuki, Junichiro Yoshimoto and Eric Murillo-Rodriguez : The psychological impact of mild lockdown in Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic: a nationwide survey under a declared state of emergency, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, Vol.17, No.24, 9382, 2020. (Summary) This study examined the psychological distress caused by non-coercive lockdown (mild lockdown) in Japan. An online survey was conducted with 11,333 people (52.4% females; mean age = 46.3 ± 14.6 years, range = 18-89 years) during the mild lockdown in the seven prefectures most affected by COVID-19 infection. Over one-third (36.6%) of participants experienced mild-to-moderate psychological distress (Kessler Psychological Distress Scale [K6] score 5-12), while 11.5% reported serious psychological distress (K6 score ≥ 13). The estimated prevalence of depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score ≥ 10) was 17.9%. Regarding the distribution of K6 scores, the proportion of those with psychological distress in this study was significantly higher when compared with the previous national survey data from 2010, 2013, 2016, and 2019. Healthcare workers, those with a history of treatment for mental illness, and younger participants (aged 18-19 or 20-39 years) showed particularly high levels of psychological distress. Psychological distress severity was influenced by specific interactional structures of risk factors: high loneliness, poor interpersonal relationships, COVID-19-related sleeplessness and anxiety, deterioration of household economy, and work and academic difficulties. Even when non-coercive lockdowns are implemented, people's mental health should be considered, and policies to prevent mental health deterioration are needed. Cross-disciplinary public-private sector efforts tailored to each individual's problem structure are important to address the mental health issues arising from lockdown. (Summary) To deter the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), many countries have imposed a lockdown with restrictions. On 7 April 2020, the Japanese government declared a state of emergency over the COVID-19 outbreak. Japan was in "mild lockdown" which was not enforceable and non-punitive with the declaration. We conducted an online survey to investigate factors associated with psychological distress in the "mild lockdown" under a declared state of emergency for COVID-19. We collected data on 11,333 inhabitants (52.4% women, 46.3 ± 14.6 years) living in the seven prefectures where the declaration was first applied. The investigation dates of this study, 11 and 12 May 2020, were in the final phase of the state of emergency. The survey was conducted in real-time to minimize participants' recall bias. In addition to psychological inventories often used worldwide, the questionnaires used in this survey included lifestyle and stress management items related to COVID-19 and various socio-demographic items including occupation (e.g. healthcare worker) or income. (Summary) <p>Two experiments on goodness and complexity judgments of dot patterns in a square matrix framework were conducted based on studies by Hamada et al. (2016, 2017). Four groups of 52 undergraduates (<i>N</i>=208) judged the goodness and complexity of original and expanded patterns consisting of six 8-dot and six 13-dot prototype patterns and thirty-six 21-dot compound patterns. Rotational/reflectional symmetries were invariant, generating cyclic (C<sub>n</sub>) and dihedral (D<sub>n</sub>) groups (<i>n</i>=1, 2, 4). Results showed that only complexity increased consistently as the number of dots increased. Adding twelve 8-dot and 13-dot patterns increased the complexity of 21-dot patterns. Apart from the complexity of 8-dot D<sub>2</sub> patterns, goodness and simplicity increased one-dimensionally with respect to the order of the matrix. The complexity of 8-dot D<sub>2</sub> patterns decreased because of spatial filters on linearity, which did not affect goodness. Concerning the original and expanded patterns, configurations of 21-dot patterns did not influence goodness or complexity. (Summary) <p>The group theoretical model of symmetry cognition (Hamada et al., 2016) was tested based on goodness and complexity judgments of dot patterns in a matrix framework. These patterns were divided into cyclic group patterns, determined by the number of rotations, and dihedral group patterns, determined by the number of reflection axes. The former have rotational symmetries and the latter reflectional and rotational symmetries. Undergraduates (<i>N</i>=104) rated the goodness or complexity of 21-dot compound patterns. The goodness and simplicity of these patterns in both their original form and with partially expanded frameworks increased monotonously with the number of transformations. Partially expanding a pattern influenced the goodness of cyclic groups with one transformation, but not the goodness of dihedral groups. Partially expanding a pattern did have an effect on the complexity of both groups, but only with a large number of transformations. For patterns with 4 transformations, the goodness and simplicity of dihedral patterns were higher than those of cyclic group patterns. (Summary) In order to investigate the effects of color stimuli of the Rorschach inkblot method (RIM), the cerebral activity of 40 participants with no history of neurological or psychiatric illness was scanned while they engaged in the Rorschach task. A scanned image of the ten RIM inkblots was projected onto a screen in the MRI scanner. Cerebral activation in response to five achromatic color cards and five chromatic cards were compared. As a result, a significant increase in brain activity was observed in bilateral visual areas V2 and V3, parietooccipital junctions, pulvinars, right superior temporal gyrus, and left premotor cortex for achromatic color cards (p < .001). For the cards with chromatic color, significant increase in brain activity was observed in left visual area V4 and left orbitofrontal cortex (p < .001). Furthermore, a conjoint analysis revealed various regions were activated in responding to the RIM. The neuropsychological underpinnings of the response process, as described by Acklin and Wu-Holt (1996), were largely confirmed. (Summary) Two experiments on goodness and complexity for dot patterns were performed, using a within-participant design, regarding the contrast polarity of open and solid circles. The results supported the three-stage model of pattern perception by Hamada et al. (2011b), as follows. The patterns used were invariant under the transformations of rotation and reflection, forming cyclic (C_n) or dihedral (D_n) groups (n=1, 2, 3, 4). Goodness of all dot patterns and simplicity of compound patterns increased separately as functions of the orders of C_n and D_n groups, revealing processing at the third structural description stage. The complexity of filled patterns with collinear elements, which consisted of three solid circles, depended identically upon the orders of Cn and Dn groups, revealing that processing occurred at the second feature and structure detection stage, whereas the complexity of the open/solid reversal patterns was processed at the third stage. The complexity of noncollinear element patterns was not consistent with the symmetry groups, revealing that processing occurred at the first primary processing stage. (Summary) This study examined the ordinal agreement and order conservation hypotheses of Imai (1986), which predict that a pattern is considered good if it is invariant for more transformations. Undergraduates (N=144) made goodness ratings for 21-dot compound patterns. The patterns consisted of 8-dot and 13-dot figures with solid and/or open circles. Both the figures and the patterns were invariant under the transformations of rotation and reflection, forming cyclic (C1, C2, C4) or dihedral (D1, D2, D4) groups. The results showed no significant differences among the four combinations of solid and open circles. When the 13-dot C1 figure was overlapped with the 8-dot figures, the C1 compound patterns were rated the poorest. The goodness ratings of the Cn and Dn patterns were the increasing functions of the number of transformations, which supports the ordinal agreement hypothesis. When alternated with the 8-dot D4 figure, the 8-dot C1 figure superimposed with the 13-dot figures reduced the goodness ratings of the C1 patterns, but the order of the ratings was conserved, which supports the order conservation hypothesis. (Summary) The digit symbol substitution test (DSST) is a clinically useful and widely accepted tool for the detection of various psychiatric disorders. Investigating neural activity during the DSST is useful when considering the relationship between the poor performance on the DSST and neurocognitive deficits. However, obtaining reliable functional imaging of the neural mechanisms associated with this test is challenging due to motion artifacts. To circumvent this problem, we examined frontal lobe activity during the DSST using multichannel near-infrared spectroscopy, a noninvasive functional imaging technique that does not interfere with the DSST procedure. Twenty-five healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. Changes in the concentration of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxyHb) during the DSST were determined bilaterally in 52 measurement points (channels) on the frontal area. We found significant increases in oxyHb in more than 70% of the channels, with the intensity of the increase being more pronounced in the left hemisphere. Several channels showed significant positive correlations between changes in oxyHb and DSST performance. Some of the channels with a significant increase in oxyHb during the DSST did not show a correlation with the DSST performance. Our findings indicate that the DSST could prove useful as a frontal lobe stimulating task. Further examinations of DSST/near-infrared spectroscopy analyses of neural mechanisms in patients with psychiatric and neurological diseases are necessary to assess its effectiveness in clinical practice for the evaluation of neuropsychopathology. (Summary) ロールシャッハ·テストの反応過程における認知・神経心理学的検討が行なわれている研究はまだ少ない．そこで，本稿では情報モデルの観点から反応過程モデルを検討している海外論文を紹介し，反応過程の認知・神経心理学的解釈を行なう上での理論的基礎とした．結果，反応過程では様々な認知処理とそれに対応する脳部位が関与し，複雑な認知処理が求められることが推測された．また，反応過程の最終選択においては前頭葉が大きく関与していることが考察された．There has been little concern about the response processes of the Rorschach inkblot method from cognitive-neuropsychological studies. We reviewed a couple of studies discussing the process from information processing model, to progress a theoretical basis on cognitive-neuropsychological explanation of the process. (Summary) 本稿では，NIRS による投影法課題遂行時の脳機能計測にむけた基礎的な資料をえるため，認知課題遂行時のNIRS 測定研究を概観し，その結果と分析方法を検討した．その結果，言語流暢性課題における左前頭葉の賦活に関する結果を中心に，認知課題遂行時の脳機能計測におけるNIRS の有効性を示唆する成果が得られていることが明らかとなった．また，データの分析方法では，個々人の計測データ内に限定した分析方法に加え，被験者間やチャンネル間の比較が導入されていることが明らかとなった．以上の知見をもとに，今後の展望をおこなった．In this paper, we reviewed studies measuring prefrontal brain hemodynamic changes during cognitive tasks by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). (Summary) In this study，the utility of "Animal Collage Technique" designed by the author wasexamined by having university students participated from two aspects; theeffect of the relaxation and the promotion of self-understanding. First，theeffect of the relaxation of``the animal cut" and ``the animal's motion" in thesecuts was examined. As the result，a significant difference was found in theeffect of the relaxation between subjects whose use of ``the animal cut" wasone piece or less and subjects whose use of it was two or more. But the effectof the relaxation of animal's motion was not apparent. Secondly，thepromotion of self-understanding was examined by looking at the presence ofand/or absence of usage of the animal cut as a self image，and also by thedifference between ``the entire animal" cut and ``the animal part" cut. But，these differences did not influence the promotion ofself-understanding. However，it was found that the image of the animal wasdifferent depending on the individual，even if the same``animal cut" waschosen as a self-image. (Summary) In this paper，to clarify the use of Kinetic Family Drawings (KFD) andFamily Image Test (FIT) in the psychotherapy，family's characteristics thatboth techniques were made to notice were examined by focusing on thedifference of the stimulation structure. As a result，there is no difference inthe matter noticed about "family members' characteristics","relations offamily members"，and "episodes concerning a family" as for KFD and FIT.Therefore，it has been understood to be able to notice these matters even byeach technique in the psychotherapy. It is easy for FIT with half structuralstimulus to notice specific family feature. It is easy for KFD withnon-structural stimulus to notice about various matters of the family fromthe past to the future.Moreover，the difference of feature of the family interpreted by KFD andFIT was clarified，and the possibility as the test battery was examined. As aresult，it is easy for KFD with non-structural stimulus to understandconcrete family feature in various situations. On the other hand，it wasclarified that family's basic characteristic was understood by FIT with halfstructural stimulus. Therefore，the method for the commentary use of bothtechniques was suggested. Drawing test is expressed an unconscious emotionand desire without speaking，therefore a tester needs"Post Drawing Interrogation (PDI)" to understand anunconscious emotion and desire. PDI prompts self-understanding and narrative. However，there is not astudy about PDI.Twice drawing method is to carry out usual drawing test as two times in one assessment. This method isapt to express an unconscious emotion and desire above standard drawing test.I devised twice drawingmethod of DAP. But twice drawing method of DAP is not used in addition to useful PDIThis study attempts to devise Post Drawing Interrogation for twice drawing method DAP，PDI promptsself-understanding. I performed investigation for collage students and graduate students. They draw aperson first，and answer PDI about the drawing. They are asked to draw a second person and answer PDlfor the drawing without a break.PDI about the first drawing stimulated the second drawing and narrative. (Summary) 一般に臨床心理学の教育ならびに専門家の養成においては，構造化された場面で個人を対象におこなう面接法を学んでいる．しかし著者らが勤務する精神科デイ・ケアでは，より日常的で低構造的な場面でメンバーと関わることが求められる．心理臨床家として教育されてきたありかたと，精神科デイ・ケア心理職としての役割は異なることが多く，そこに役割葛藤が生じる．生じている葛藤を認識していないために生じる，転移，逆転移，行動化などについて，事例をもとに考察を加えた．It is common in Japanese graduate schools, that the training of psychotherapist is based on classic one-on-one therapy, emphasizing neutrality. The Authors (Uchiumi & Nakamura) have some role conflicts as psychologists at a psychiatric day-care unit, because of the gap between what we trained and our actual role at the unit. Illustrating a few cases that made us confused, we pointed out that the structural difference between one-on-one and day-care approach. It is suggested that psychologists should be more sensitive to what is happening "here and now".
