(Summary) This study aimed to evaluate and validate the educational effectiveness of a job shadowing class as a dental teaching programme for preclinical dental students through a questionnaire that assessed related student perceptions. A total of 124 preclinical (second year) dental students at Tokushima University participated in job shadowing placements from 2017 to 2019. Each student observed dental practice or surgery for 1 day in the university hospital. After shadowing, the students were requested to fill out a nine-item questionnaire based on a five-point scale. The first analysis was performed to calculate the correlation for each item. Furthermore, regression analysis for the categorical data was performed to show the relationship between eight questions (Items 1-8) and one question (Item 9: comprehensive evaluation). Next, factor analysis was performed to determine students' perceptions regarding the shadowing class. Ninety-eight students (response rate: 79%) completed the questionnaire. There was a strong relationship amongst Items 1, 8 and 9 ("interested in dentistry as a job," "learning motivation" and "comprehensive evaluation" respectively) based on the results of the correlation and regression analysis. The factor analysis led to three student perceptions as latent factors, namely, "Interesting," "Self-awareness" and "Future Goal," which had a relatively close inter-factor correlation (0.465-0.772). The finding suggests that job shadowing may increase a students' interest in a dentistry career at an early stage of their education and learning motivation, along with generating self-awareness. This programme may present possible educational effectiveness in dental education. (Summary) Active learning is a concept that allows students to study and learn actively by themselves to get knowledge. There are several methods of active learning, including flipped classroom (FC) and team-based learning (TBL). In FC, students are required to study before classes. In TBL, students also study before class, take individual readiness assurance test (iRAT) and team readiness assurance test (tRAT), then discuss group assignment projects (GAPs) during class. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness between FC and TBL.<br> The effectiveness of FC and TBL was assessed from the results of the term-end examinations, questionnaires and practice examinations. To check the difficulty of the term-end examinations, control dentists took the same examinations and we calculated the equating score with item response theory.<br> Statistical analysis showed that the correct answer rate in term-end examinations was significantly different in comparison with the time of the trial, and for the participants (students and dentists). The term-end examination score of FC and TBL did not show a statistical difference. The student questionnaire showed that TBL had higher scores than FC on various factors such as student positive attitude, preparation, ingenuity of teacher and achieving the class goals. The crown & bridge score from the practice examination of 6<sup>th</sup>-year students who had FC + TBL were constantly higher than the Japanese national average score. The identification index of FC and TBL did not show the statistical difference and there was no statistical difference on item response theory between FC and TBL. Tetsuo Ichikawa, Rudi Wigianto and Omar Maningo Rodis : Bibliography on Academic Exchanges of Tokushima University Faculty of Dentistry with Seven Indonesian Faculties, Journal of Oral Health and Biosciences, Vol.32, No.2, 41-47, 2020. (Summary) Tokushima University Faculty of Dentistry has signed academic agreements with seven faculties in Indonesia, and joint international meetings between these Indonesian universities have been held biannually. Moreover, undergraduate student exchange programs have been executed every year with three faculties. Behind the development of these successful outcomes is a story of a large amount of effort by pioneers. The purpose of this article is to present the process and history of the academic exchanges of Tokushima University Faculty of Dentistry with Indonesian faculties at present and to discuss future exchange programs. Omar Maningo Rodis and Rozzano De Castro Locsin : The implementation of the Japanese Dental English core curriculum: active learning based on peer-teaching and learning activities., BMC Medical Education, Vol.19, No.256, 2019. (Summary) Education in Japan and other Asian countries advocates the stereotypical passive learning style where students are limited in their breadth of knowledge dismissing anything not imparted by their teachers. With globalized education, professions are becoming very competitive, embracing student-centeredness compelling them to introduce active learning activities. A study funded by Japan's Ministry of Education conducted a needs analysis, proposed a solution, and implemented an active learning approach. Since the latter is still new in the Japanese teaching-learning environment, this current study aimed at assessing the willingness of undergraduate students of dental medicine to participate in active learning activities rather than the typical passive-style teaching-learning educational process. Three active implementation-learning activities, namely International Group Discussions (IGD), Student-Teacher Experience (STE) and Role Play Activities (RPA) were included in the Dental English course in a classroom setting at a dental school in Japan. Students had to choose between participating in the activity or taking the final examination. Two hundred and three third-year undergraduate dental students participated over a 5-year period from October 2013 to March 2017. For IGD, the researchers assigned students to a topic and grouped them with visiting international exchange students. For STE, researchers gave students teacher-prepared presentation slides on basic dental topics, which they presented in front of their classmates. For RPA, students had to do prepared role-play and impromptu role play. Peer and teacher feedbacks of the activities were given to all students. At the end of the course, the students evaluated the active learning activities and wrote their comments in a free entry survey. All 203 students participated in the active learning activities confirming the changing learning needs of Japanese students in this dental school. The most common comment was that the class was interesting, fun, an easy-to-understand way to learn dental terms, and a safe way to express themselves in the English language. The majority of Japanese students preferred the active learning style. The study revealed that students reported greater engagement and better learning with proper guidance and time to prepare for the activities. (Summary) The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of improving the attitude of dental students towards the use of a full-body patient simulation system (SIMROID) compared to the traditional mannequin (CLINSIM) for dental clinical education. The participants were 10 male undergraduate dental students who had finished clinical training in the university hospital 1 year before this study started. They performed a crown preparation on an upper pre-molar tooth using SIMROID and CLINSIM as the practical clinical trials. The elapsed time for preparation was recorded. The taper of the abutment teeth was measured using a 3-dimensional shape-measuring device after this trial. In addition, a self-reported questionnaire was collected that included physical pain, treatment safety and maintaining a clean area for each simulator. Qualitative data analysis of a free format report about SIMROID was performed using text mining analysis. This trial was performed twice at 1-month intervals. The students considered physical pain, treatment safety and a clean area for SIMROID significantly better than that for CLINSIM (P < .01). The elapsed time of preparation in the second practical clinical trial was significantly lower than in the first for SIMROID and CLINSIM (P < .01). However, there were no significant differences between the abutment tapers for both systems. For the text mining analysis, most of the students wrote that SIMROID was similar to real patients. The use of SIMROID was proven to be effective in improving the attitude of students towards patients, thereby giving importance to considerations for actual patients during dental treatment. (Summary) The aim of this study was to determine the validity of peer evaluation for team-based learning (TBL) classes in dental education in comparison with the term-end examination records and TBL class scores. Examination and TBL class records of 256 third- and fourth-year dental students in six fixed prosthodontics courses from 2013 to 2015 in one dental school in Japan were investigated. Results of the term-end examination during those courses, individual readiness assurance test (IRAT), group readiness assurance test (GRAT), group assignment projects (GAP), and peer evaluation of group members in TBL classes were collected. Significant positive correlations were found between all combinations of peer evaluation, IRAT, and term-end examination. Individual scores also showed a positive correlation with group score (total of GRAT and GAP). From the investigation of the correlations in the six courses, significant positive correlations between peer evaluation and individual score were found in four of the six courses. In this study, peer evaluation seemed to be a valid index for learning performance in TBL classes. To verify the effectiveness of peer evaluation, all students have to realize the significance of scoring the team member's performance. Clear criteria and detailed instruction for appropriate evaluation are also required. (Summary) The premature loss of primary teeth is a potential risk factor for poor arch length development. Adequate arch length is important to the progression of the permanent teeth. Poor arch length can lead to crowding, ectopic eruption, or impaction of these teeth. This study is designed to assess the prevalence of premature loss of primary teeth in the 5-10-year-old age group. The study group included 185 children, that is, 91 boys and 94 girls. The dental examination was conducted by an experienced examiner under sufficient artificial light. Data including patient age and missing teeth were collected. Descriptive statistics were applied for data analysis, and from the results, Chi-square tests were used at a level of significance of 5% (P < 0.05). We observed a 40.54% prevalence of premature loss of primary teeth with no statistically significant difference between genders. The lower left primary second molar was the most commonly absent tooth in the dental arch (13.5%). The status of premature loss of primary teeth was high in the study group. Implementation of efficient educational and preventive programs to promote oral health would help children maintain a healthy primary dentition and eventually prevent the disturbances in the future development of normal occlusion. Early detection and management of the space problems associated with the early loss of primary teeth would help in reducing malocclusion problems. (Summary) The aims of this study were to evaluate the quality of team-based learning (TBL) in prosthodontics education for fourth-year dental students at Tokushima University School of Dentistry and to compare this teaching method with traditional lecture-based delivery. Participants in the study were 36 students (22 males and 14 females) who attended the TBL-style fixed prosthodontics course. Ten 60-minute classes were held. The first three were traditional lecture-style classes and were followed by one class introducing the TBL style. The remaining six classes constituted the TBL-format fixed prosthodontics course. The effectiveness of TBL was evaluated through student questionnaires at the end of each class and the results of the term-end examination. The questionnaire revealed high student approval for TBL-style learning, and active group discussion among students during TBL was a key factor in these ratings. In the results of the term-end examination, there were significantly higher scores on the questions that covered TBL-taught material than those covering traditional lecture-taught topics. The results of this study suggest that TBL-style lecture was more effective than traditional-style lecture for teaching fixed prosthodontics and that TBL was a more efficient mode of delivering dental education than traditional lecture-based teaching. (Summary) Globalization of the professions has become a necessity among schools and universities across the world. It has affected the medical and dental professions in terms of curriculum design and student and patient needs. In Japan, where medicine and dentistry are taught mainly in the Japanese language, profession-based courses in English, known as Medical English and Dental English, have been integrated into the existing curriculum among its 83 medical and 29 dental schools. Unfortunately, there is neither a core curriculum nor a model syllabus for these courses. This report is based on a survey, two discussion forums, a workshop, and finally, the drafting of a proposed core curriculum for dental English approved by consensus of the participants from each university. The core curriculum covers the theoretical aspects, including dental English terms and oral pathologies; and practical aspects, including blended learning and dentist-patient communication. It is divided into modules and is recommended to be offered for at least two semesters. The core curriculum is expected to guide curriculum developers in schools where dental English courses are yet to be offered or are still in their early development. It may also serve as a model curriculum to medical and dental schools in countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, and Central and South America, where English is not the medium of instruction. (Summary) Simulated patients (SPs) need education and training in required skills to be effective resources in education. This study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of an SP training programme based on the accuracy of trainee responses and the appropriateness of their feedback. Thirty-two applicants to the training programme and 35 experienced SPs were included in this study. The experienced SPs served as a reference group. The rate of accurate responses and the rate of appropriate feedback were assessed with pre- and post-training tests, and these two outcome measures were compared with those of the experienced SPs. No significant differences were found in trainee response accuracy or appropriateness of feedback between pre- and post-training tests. The response accuracy rate of the trainees on the pre-training test was significantly lower than that of SPs with 1-2 years of experience, whilst there was no significant difference between these SPs and the trainees on the post-training test. (Summary) Dental schools in Japan are among many worldwide whose medium of instruction is not in English. With advances in science, technology, and communication, the demand for the globalization of professions increases. At present, dental schools in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe have started revising their dental curricula to either include English courses for dentistry or offer a full English dental curriculum. In Japan, dental English courses started to be introduced into curricula in the early 1990s. However, a survey conducted in 1999 found that English courses were not offered in Japan's twenty-nine dental schools and there was no consensus as to what such courses should include or when and how they should be taught. Ten years after that survey, the survey results reported in this article found that the problems reported in the 1999 survey still exist. Additionally, there are still differences among schools offering English courses in terms of the timing and contents of the courses. Since teachers and school officials will have an important role in curriculum development, this article recommends that a fact-finding meeting with educators, school, and education officials be initiated to discuss, develop, and implement a core curriculum for these dental English courses. (Summary) There are still no data available on the relationship between postural stability and occlusal status among the elderly. To examine relationships between postural stability and occlusal status through a cohort study among elderly Japanese. Oral examination, occlusal status, postural stability and a questionnaire were conducted and given to 87 community-dwelling Japanese at enrolment. The average occlusal pressure of the female group was statistically higher than the male group while average occlusal pressure and postural stability length were lesser in the group with more remaining teeth. Postural stability area and number of remaining teeth showed statistically significant correlations. Postural stability length was lesser in the group with strong occlusal force. Furthermore, the number of decayed teeth was fewer in the good hygiene group. This study identified a close relationship between occlusal status and postural stability of Japanese older individuals. Occlusal hypofunction was observed more in those with occlusal problems, and a decrease in their occlusal functions resulted in postural instability. (Summary) The aim of the study was to assess the presence of six common cariogenic bacteria from Cariostat-inoculated plaque samples of Japanese elementary school children through PCR analysis and check its associations with caries risk testing the validity of Cariostat as a caries risk assessment tool. This epidemiological school-based study investigated plaque samples of 399 Japanese elementary school children. Assessed using the Cariostat, 48.2% of the children had high caries risk. DNA detection of Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus, Streptococcus salivarius, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus fermentum and both S. mutans and S. sobrinus was seen in 65.2%, 24.1%, 69.7%, 17.5%, 7.8%, 19.3%, and 17.3% of the participants, respectively. Except for S. salivarius, the presence of all other investigated bacteria resulted in a statistically significant increase among the proportion of subjects with high caries risk. Caries risk assessed using Cariostat was significantly influenced by the presence of cariogenic bacteria. Being a selective medium for cariogenic bacteria, the Cariostat can be a useful and direct source of cariogenic bacterial DNA for PCR analysis while effectively assessing caries risk. (Summary) In dental treatment of children who are in development of communication ability, the dentists must precisely grasp the psychological state of patients. Although the relationship between nasal skin temperature and psychological state has been reported, their studies experimented only in stress condition. In the recovery stage, the relationships still have not been investigated. Therefore, in this study, we used ice stimulation to subjects' palms as a stressor and tried to clear the relationships between nasal skin temperature and psychological state in the recovery stage from the stress condition. The perception levels and anxiety levels during the experiment period were examined using Time series Visual Analog Scale (T-VAS) and state-trait anxiety inventory-form (STAI) respectively. The nasal skin temperature was measured with thermography every 5 minutes. As a result, when levels of pain and anxiety increased by the ice stimulation, the nasal skin surface temperature decreased. On the other hand, when the pain and anxiety were taken away after the ice stimulation was stopped, the nasal skin temperature increased and reached the same temperature as before the stimulation. These results suggest strongly that the psychological state of pain and anxiety could be predicted by the measurement of nasal skin temperature. (Summary) コミュニケーション能力が発達途上にある小児の歯科診療において，歯科医は患児の心理状態を的確に把握する必要がある．これまでに，診療室レベルで鼻部皮膚表面温度と心理状態との関連性に関する研究が行われてきたが，複数のストレッサーが関係するため結果の解釈が困難であった．そこで本研究では，鼻部皮膚温度と心理状態との関連性を明確にするために，実験室条件においてストレッサーとして単一の氷刺激(手掌部)を用いて，痛みおよび不安の消長モデルの構築を試みた．実験期間中の知覚レベルおよび不安レベルをTime series Visual Analog Scale(T-VAS)および日本語版状態・特性不安検査(STAI)を使って調べた．また，鼻部皮膚温度は，サーモグラフィーを使って10秒毎に測定された．その結果，氷刺激による痛み等の知覚レベルおよび不安感が増大する時は，鼻部皮膚温度は低下した．また，氷刺激停止後に痛みや不安感が時間の経過とともに減少する時，鼻部皮膚温度は上昇し，刺激前の温度にまで回復した．また，実用性を考慮して，測定タイムポイントを数点に絞った場合も，温度変化の特徴をとらえることは可能であった．よって，これらの関係性を利用することで，サーモグラフィーによる鼻部皮膚温度の測定から痛みや不安のような心理状態の評価を行える可能性が強く示唆された． (Keyword) pediatric dentistry / nasal skin temperature / psychology / pain / anxiety (Link to Search Site for Scientific Articles) ● CiNii @ National Institute of Informatics (CRID): 1390845713025865856 (CiNii: 1390845713025865856)

(Summary) To assess caries risk and check the presence of four commonly found oral cariogenic bacteria in "8020" achievers. Initial report based on Japan's newly implemented "8020" campaign, which aims to promote health and awareness in older people. Simply stated, the goal is, at 80 years, to maintain 20 teeth. Healthy community-dwelling elderly individuals of Okayama Prefecture, Japan. One hundred sixty individuals aged 80 and older with 20 of their own natural teeth. General and oral health conditions, caries risk assessment using the Cariostat method, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection of four oral cariogenic bacteria. The participants had an average of 24.7 teeth, of which 12.1 were sound, 12.2 were treated, and 0.4 were untreated. Based on Cariostat scores, 64.4% had low caries risk. Using PCR, Streptococcus mutans, S. sobrinus, Lactobacillus casei, and L. plantarum were detected in 51.3%, 23.1%, 40%, and 25% of the participants, respectively. S. mutans (P<.001), S. sobrinus (P=.002), L. casei (P<.001), and L. plantarum (P=.001) deoxyribonucleic acid band was detected more in participants with high caries risk scores. Participants with low caries risk scores had low prevalence of cariogenic bacteria, 20 or more sound teeth, and fewer missing teeth. Incorporating caries risk assessment, using the Cariostat and PCR analysis, in the "8020" campaign in health systems worldwide will contribute to a better life for the aging society, initiate research interest regarding the program, and improve current health policies. (Summary) This simulation study was carried out to analyze and evaluate Cariostat-inoculated samples through a conventional PCR protocol specific for <I>Streptococcus mutans</I> strains and also for the purpose of establishing acceptable storage conditions for Cariostat-inoculated samples in cases in which optimal storage conditions are not feasible. A reference strain of <I>Streptococcus mutans</I> (ATCC 25175) was used in the study. The samples were subjected to different inoculation, incubation and storage conditions, and bacterial viability was checked through a conventional PCR technique and by assessment of colony growth on different agar media. Band detection of all samples incubated for even up to 120 hours at 37°C was still possible, indicating less DNA degradation. Samples stored at -20°C yielded results closest to those of samples incubated normally (without storage), followed by samples stored at 4°C and then samples stored at room temperature. The difference in these results, however did not influence the quality of DNA to an unsatisfactory level. For bacterial viability through agar plating, even if there were no more viable growth on the plates, band detection from strains inoculated and stored in Cariostat was still possible. From these results, we conclude that samples stored under various conditions can be further analyzed using DNA extraction protocols for conventional qualitative PCR amplification. (Summary) For prevention of nosocomical infection, hand disinfection is one of the most important factors. The objective of this study was to assess methods of hand disinfection. As some intresting findings were observed through this study, we would like to report on them in this paper.<BR>Twenty pediatric dentists washed and disinfected their hands under the conditions of not wearing rubber gloves and wearing. After washing the hands in the running water, using a cake of soap, disinfected them with 75% povidone-iodone andscrubbing the paper towel, they pressed then five right fingers on Brain Heart Infuusion agars and the agars were incubated in aerobically atomosphereat 37°C, for 48 h. As results, under the condition of not wearing the rubber gloves, microorganisms could not be eliminated with any methods, but when wearing them some dentists were able to eliminate microorganisms properly by washing in running water. Some dentists who wore larger gloves were not able to eliminate microorganisms using a cake of soap but all of the dentists were able to eliminate them by disinfecting with 75% povidone iodone. Based on these results we must use well fitting rubber gloves and disinfect ourhands.
