(Summary) This paper continues a discussion of 21st century goals in education as they relate to the Japanese Ministry of Education guidelines, PISA outcomes and recommendations, and for broader contextualization, American approaches to 21st century education. With interest in meeting these goals at the university level, the authors are exploring the possibility of an experiment in melding of design and Media English into an interdisciplinary curriculum. This paper in particular looks at current practice regarding the use of TED talks in the English literacy classroom and in a basic design course. (Summary) Communication problemshave a risen due to thelanguage barrier between foreign students parents and teachers in public schools in Japan. The iPad application "TALK" was developed to deal with this situation. The role of TALK will be to assist teachers in sending school schedule information to foreign students'parents via e-mail. The schedules will be automatically translated to the mother language of each student. In addition, TALK will provide teachers with a way to send emergency information, including evacuation maps and messages to parents. Through these means, the creators of TALK aim to provide a solution system for public schools to deal with the communication problem between foreign students'parents and teachers.Currently, it is possible to download the application from the"App Store"online. We are planning to refine the application by carrying out a trial at an actual school in the near future.
