Subject of Study

Molecular Mechanism of Expression and Regulation of Water Channel Aquaporins in the Exocrine Glands (aquaporin, water channel proteins, exocrine glands) (Water is a fundamental component in the living system, and therefore its transport mechanism has been studied in many fields. In 1992, a first protein of water channel, aquaporin1 (AQP1), was discovered, which facilitates the water movement across the cell membrane. In mammals, 11 members of AQPs presently exist, constituting a gene family. AQP5 is strongly expressed in the tissues like the salivary gland and supposed to be an exocrine-type water channel. We are studying (1) regulation of AQP5 expression, (2) regulation of AQP5 function, (3) divergent expression of AQP5 gene, (4) regulation of AQP5 expression during development and differentiation in the tissues of the salivary and lacrimal gland, the gastrointestinal tract, and lung.)
Induction of Inflammation Cytokines in the Salivary Gland and the Defense System of Oral Cavity (inflammatory cytokine, innate immunity, salivary glands, Signal transduction of proinflammatory cytokine receptors) (Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play an important role in the innate immune system as microbial recognition receptors. Since inflammation cytokines are induced via TLR in the salivary gland and are secreted into the oral cavity, it is presumable that the innate immunity is active as a defense system in the oral cavity. We are studying the defense system of oral cavity, under the theory that "The oral cavity-salivary gland axiss " maintains oral hygiene.)
