Bioactive Substance Physiology
Cell Biology

Subject of Study

Comparative physiology and biochemistry of marine bioactive substances (sea urchin, scorpionfish, mitogenic activity, cytotoxicity, bioactive substance, lectin, differentiation, apoptosis) (I have been studying for twenty years on sea urchin bioactive substances. More recently, I have also studied on fish venoms from scorpionfish. Our recent data revealed the isolation and some characterization of D-galactose-specific lectins (SUL-I and SUL-II) and a heparin-binding lectin from the toxoneustid sea urchins. Especially, SUL-I has mitogenic stimulation on T-cells, chemotactic properties for neutrophils, and regulates mast cell function. On the other hand, two venoms from scorpionfish have mitogenic and cytotoxic activity. A glycoprotein was isolated from the dorsal spines of redfin velvetfish. The glycoprotein with a molecular mass of 110 kDa has cytotoxic activity on murine leukemic cells.)
