(Summary) <jats:p><jats:italic>Hypermastus tokunagai</jats:italic> is a eulimid gastropod infecting the sand dollar <jats:italic>Scaphechinus mirabilis</jats:italic>. The eulimid is easily detached from the host and thus regarded as a temporary parasite. In this study, the growth and reproductive cycle of <jats:italic>H. tokunagai</jats:italic> were investigated using specimens collected from <jats:italic>S. mirabilis</jats:italic> in the western Seto Inland Sea, Japan. Newly recruited individuals of <jats:italic>H. tokunagai</jats:italic> appeared in early autumn and grew rapidly, while growth was retarded from mid-autumn to winter months. A second rapid growth occurred the following summer. Based on the growth pattern, the life span of <jats:italic>H. tokunagai</jats:italic> was estimated to be more than 20 months. This longer life span compared to other eulimids could be due to the accessibility and population stability of its host <jats:italic>S. mirabilis</jats:italic>. (Summary) The eulimid gastropod <i>Hypermastus tokunagai</i> is an ectoparasite that utilizes the sand dollar <i>Scaphechinus mirabilis </i>as a host on the sandy bottom in Japan. The distribution patterns of <i>H. tokunagai</i> in populations of <i>S. mirabilis</i> were studied in the western part of the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. The density (= number of individuals per m<sup>2</sup>) of <i>H. tokunagai</i> was significantly higher in the central region where there is a higher host abundance. On the other hand, a higher prevalence (= percentage of infected hosts) and mean abundance (= number of parasites per host) were recorded in the marginal regions where there is a lower host abundance. These results suggest that eulimid larvae are widely dispersed in a host population but settle largely in a host-abundant area. The infection also showed higher levels in inshore regions than offshore. (Summary) Two species of the eulimid genus <i>Hypermastus </i>are redescribed based on specimens recently collected from sand dollars caught in the Seto Inland Sea and the type specimens: <i>Hypermastus peronellicola </i>(Kuroda & Habe, 1950) from <i>Peronella japonica</i>, and<i> H. tokunagai</i> (Yokoyama, 1922) from <i>Scaphechinus mirabilis</i>. These two eulimid species are very similar in their shell morphology but are distinguished from each other based on characters such as the proportions of shell length to several dimensions of the shell, width/length ratios of each teleoconch whorl, the protruding part of the outer lip margin, and the coloration of the visceral mass that can be seen through the translucent shell in living specimens. <i>H</i>.<i> peronellicola</i> was attached to the host by inserting the proboscis into the host's body, whereas no proboscis penetration was observed in <i>H. tokunagai</i>. (Summary) To evaluate the mortality of the bivalve Ruditapes philippinarum caused by predatory animals, two experiments were conducted in the coastal area of the western Seto Inland Sea around the Tana Marine Biological Laboratory, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. On the tidal flat, four cages of different designs were set on the bottom, and 200 individuals of R. philippinarum (14.8 mm in average shell length [SL]) were put into each cage (Experiment 1). From the number of survivors after four months, the mortalities due to environmental factors, predators entering from the upper side and those from the bottom were estimated to be 0.615, 0.225 and 0.170, respectively. On the other hand, in the raft experiment, containers filled with sand and R. philippinarum juveniles (< 5 mm SL) were set into the cages hanging from the raft at depths of 1, 3, 5 and 7 m (Experiment 2 ). Five individuals of the sand dollar Scaphechinus mirabilis were also introduced into the container at each depth. Four months later, large-sized individuals (20-30 mm SL) of R. philippinarum were observed in the containers, indicating that the juvenile bivalves survived and grew even in the presence of S. mirabilis. Therefore, this study shows that S. mirabilis is not the major cause of mortality of R. philippinarum.
